When the days warm and grow longer the bicycle fairies come. I hear the whirl of their wheels, my name softly spoken on the wind, I must follow. By RS Raber Choosing the right bicycle. Decide where you will be doing most of your riding. A mountain bike will work on all surfaces but it is heaver and slower. A mountain bike takes about 30% more energy to operate. A road bike is superior on the road and a mountain bike is superior off road. When you are ready to buy your first bike it is a better idea to search the internet. Type “discount bikes” into your search engine and you will come up with some very good deals.
Chain stores offer lower prices but usually lower quality as well. Now that you have decided on which kind of bike you want, getting the right size is very important. Go back to your search engine and type in “bicycle sizing chart” you will get a list of sizing charts for men and women. You will also find charts for road and mountain bikes. The sizing is different. Fitting yourself to the bike Road Bike: Stand over the top tube of your bike. You should have 1 to 2 inches of space between the bar and your crotch. Next get a level and level the seat to the top bar. If you don’t you either feel like you are sliding off the front or the horn of the (saddle) seat will be shoved up into your crouch. Next you will need to adjust the height of your seat.
The seat height is correct when you leg is fully extended but not locked. You may need to slide the seat front to back to get it in the right place. Your seat is in correct position when you can look down and see just the front of your shoe with the peddle stroke at the mid- point. The widest part of your foot should be just in front or right on the peddle shaft. Your handle bars are in the correct position when you can just see the front axle of the front wheel. Mountain bike: The fitting is the same except for the top tube and the handle bars just need to be set to your comfort.
After you have completed these steps and you don’t feel right or you are experiencing pain in your knees or shoulders you should go to your local bike shop with your bike so they can check your setup. They are the real experts. It is also a good idea to get a bicycle magazine. Go back to your search engine and type in “bicycle magazine or magazine mall – magazine store – magazines” Any of them should work. My next submission will be about bicycle clothing and why you will need some.I well also include information about nutrition, hydration and equipment you will need to take with you. Then will come the actual training guide.
